During the pandemic, office chairs have also seen an increase in demand as people resorted to working from home. This brought the need for ergonomic spaces inside people’s homes, corners turned into offices, and new ergonomic furniture brought in to support individuals as they work from home.

Office Chair Disassembly: Why Do It?

As the use of ergonomic office chairs became more widespread in both offices and homes, this now calls for a certain level of technical know-how, which is helpful in handling maintenance and upkeep, even the untimely repair that might arise now and then.

Of these skills, one of the first things people must know is how to assemble and how to disassemble office chair. These are skills you don’t have to always entrust to a specialist—it’s simple enough to know for purposes of either moving the furniture to another site or location, or to do some troubleshooting due to any potential problem with the chair.

A Quick Guide on How to Disassemble the Office Chair

Chair disassembly is a simple process, and it doesn’t require any complex procedure or advance technical know-how. Check out these general steps you can follow to disassemble your office chair.

Step 1: Start by unscrewing and removing the headrest. You may use a wrench and a screwdriver to take the bolts off.

NOTE: To remove the rest of the parts, you will have to position the chair upside down on top of a table.

Step 2: Check if the backrest is removable. Most backrests can be removed, but there are those that are connected to the frame. If this is the case with your backrest, it will not be possible to remove it. However, if the backrest can be removed, you can do so by unscrewing the bolts that connect it to the body using an allen screwdriver.

Step 3. Next is the removal of the armrest. In most cases, you may not need to remove these to disassemble the chair. However, if you do need to remove them, start by removing the bolts that connect the armchair to the main chair body, and then take off any washer or plate. Remember that an armrest may have more smaller parts than the other parts of the chair, so be sure you keep them in a sealed plastic so you don’t lose any.

Step 4. Next will be the removal of the cylinder, and this is the part that can pose a challenge in the entire process. You will need a pipe wrench for this part, which you will use to clamp down on the cylinder near the bottom of the said part. Once it gets a tight grip on the cylinder, you may now turn the pipe wrench until the cylinder comes loose.

Step 5. Remove the cylinder by pulling it out of the chair’s body. Then, you will have to remove the cylinder from the base. Turn the base upside down and use a rubber mallet to help with the easy removal and dislodge of the cylinder. This may need some patience as the process might require several taps of the mallet before the cylinder comes out. You may also tap on the side of the cylinder to dislodge it more easily.

Once you have removed the cylinder, you can now check for damaged parts depending on the problem you are encountering. Does the cylinder need a replacement, perhaps? With the chair parts taken apart, it will be easy to identify the cause of any chair problem you may be having.

Important Reminders

When disassembling your chair, make sure to be careful in handling the different chair parts to ensure that you do not cause damage to the chair. Check out the tips below to help make the chair disassembly process smooth and seamless.

  • Check how the different chair parts are attached. If a part is built into the frame, it may not be possible to remove it. However, parts that are screwed into the chair by bolts may be easily removed.
  • When disassembling your office chair, you will have to take out parts such as screws. Make sure you keep them secured in a small container, or even a sealed plastic bag, to make sure they don’t stray and get lost. The last thing you want is not being able to properly assemble back the chair because a screw has gone missing.
  • Have the manufacturer’s manual within reach. This will help guide you whenever you get stuck in the process of chair disassembly.
  • When disassembling the chair, you will need to remove the chair cylinder from the base. To help make this an easy process for you, you may use a rubber mallet to help you. You may also tap on the sides of the cylinder to help loosen it from the base and make removal easy.

We hope that the instructions and tips above will give you the confidence to do your own troubleshooting and repair. And for additional guidance, you have your manufacturer’s guide with you, or you may find it in the manufacturer’s website.
