Staying Fit and Healthy Around the Holidays
Happy holidays! It’s a time of merriment, a time of full tables and endless drinks, and a time to celebrate! Most of us feel that the holidays give us permission to take a break, not only from our daily routine but also from the discipline we often impose on ourselves during regular days. And while perhaps we all deserve this break, this often comes at a cost. And usually, it’s our health that’s the first to pay the price.
From the unlimited amount of food that we have, to the sleepless nights and the pressure involved amid all the preparations, it’s easy to set aside all goals of staying healthy. But, you don’t need to do that—you can get through this holiday season still healthy and fit. How?
Check out these tips on how to stay healthy during the holidays
Watch out for excess
A full table can be pretty tempting, and many of us tend to overeat during the holidays simply because there’s a lot to eat available on the table. And while it’s easy to reason out that we’ll shed the accumulated fats and calories come New Year, not everyone actually succeeds in this resolution.
So while you allow yourself to enjoy and loosen up during the holidays, try to keep your food intake in moderation—your body will thank you for it.
Cook your meals
Cooking your meals can be time consuming, but this will allow you to select healthy ingredients for you and your family. Cooking can also be a family bonding, a holiday tradition that you can look forward to every year.
Make exercise a part of your schedule
With all the frenzy brought by the holidays and all the ongoing activities around this season, it’s so easy to break your health routines and forget to exercise and put other activities first. No wonder many people end up with extra pounds after the holidays.
More than the pounds, however, there are more dangerous risks and long-term side effects such as illness. So despite all the busyness, make sure you make time for exercise. A few minutes a day will do, as long as done consistently.
Move around
If finding time for exercise is challenging, you have the option to simply find ways to increase your movement. Decorating can help you with this, as well as doing holiday errands.
If you are working from home, don’t sit for too long—break the habit by trying to stand while you work. Get a standing desk or a desk converter and alternate between standing and sitting as you work on your computer.
Manage your holiday stress
Apart from your physical body, you also need to take care of your mental wellness. Don’t get caught up in the holiday rush, and don’t stress out on deadlines and multitasking. This can take a toll on your health and can lead to feeling fatigued after the holidays.
Find a way to enjoy, get help from your family, and remember what the holiday is all about—togetherness and fun.
So, ready for a healthy holiday this year? Take care of your body and your mind to make the most of this celebration. Happy holidays!
